In general, pregnancy could mean the beginning of a new stage in a woman’s life, with all the changes that new stage can bring. Becoming pregnant and stepping into parenthood brings both positive and negative feelings. In other words, it could be exciting but daunting as well since mummies-to-be will face a mix of feelings during pregnancy. Pregnant women’s day-to-day life is about to change as their bodies are going through physical and hormonal changes. They usually become moody and grumpy as their estrogen and progesterone hormones increase. Therefore, mood swings are a normal experience during pregnancy. This means that pregnant women will be facing emotional ups and downs.
As a first-time mum, it’s hard not to worry about everything. Pretty much all the time mums would feel that they are not able to fulfil their babies’ requirements. In most cases some of parents have not quite prepared to greet a new soul to this world. However, pregnant women should bear in mind, when they feel tense, anxious or glum all the time, it might be a sign of some serious mental health problems such as depression or anxiety.

Feeling down from time to time is a normal part of pregnant women’s life, but when emotions such as hopelessness and despair take hold and just won’t go away, you may have depression. You might be affected by the changing hormones again if you discover yourself always bawling out of the blue. The situation will become bad and might extend for weeks and months followed by a few symptoms such as feeling useless, gloomy, no appetite or you find yourself could not get enough sleep every night.
Anxiety is a feeling of unease, worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. Everyone feels anxious sometimes, but some people will find it hard to control their own worries. During pregnancy, anxiety and fear might come together with the uncertainty. Anxiety in pregnancy is very common and more than 1 in 10 pregnant women have it. Sometimes, pregnant women may have some bad and fearful thoughts like miscarriage and would start to concern about how to be a great mother later on or any pregnancy distress. Another mental disorders which is less common:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Eating Disorders (like bulimia or anorexia nervosa)
When you detect any above signs, you should remember to take care of yourself. It’s important to ask for help from doctors in no time. Don’t take medication without a doctor’s advice as it would be dangerous for you and the baby.
WAYS TO HANDLE YOUR MENTAL WELL-BEING
You could try some normal ways to cure mental health problems for your own health and baby’s instead of taking medications:
Talk to someone you trust, such as your partner, family or a friend about how you are feeling
Try learning about simple relaxation techniques and practice them regularly
Relax yourself by shopping or going to spa or a movie
Try mindfulness and meditation to manage your pain and anxiety
After you have tried the above methods but you still feel stressed and upset, consult the doctor and seek for help immediately. Always keep you doctor update even if you experience some mental health issues before pregnancy. This is because your doctor could help you to feel better by giving some treatment options when you have severe mood swings.
